WHAT IS A COAT OF ARMS?

This is not a coat of arms!

It is an heraldic (or armorial) achievement.

The design on the shield, correctly "the arms", may be described as a coat of arms, but that is the loose usage of a term originally introduced for the linen surcoat a knight wore over his armour and that displayed his arms.
