New Directions in Heraldry

At the XXV International Congress of Genealogical and Heraldic Sciences in Dublin earlier this year, David Appleton presented a short paper outlining his ideas on some new directions the development of heraldry might follow. We do not necessarily agree with all he proposes, but his thoughts do deserve the widest circulation, and readers should find the analyses presented in the tables in his annexes very useful.

The author prepared his address as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file, and that is how we present it here. Readers will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader (v. 4.0 or later), and this may be obtained free from http://www.adobe.com

The act of installing Adobe Acrobat Reader will install a plug-in into readers’ browsers which will allow PDF files to be read directly in the preferred browser.

We add our thanks to the author’s thanks for the various permissions granted by copyright holders for the use of pictures of various coats of arms.
