Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
creator of Sherlock Holmes
|A reader in New Zealand kindly sent us this picture of Conan Doyles arms. We do not know the artist, but we publish it as a fair example of heraldic art in the first half of the last century.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Edinburgh of Irish parents, educated at Stoneyhurst and in Germany, studied medicine at Edinburgh, and began to write when, as a young doctor without private means, he became impoverished. He served as a physician in the South Africa War and was knighted for his writings on Britain's policies there.
